Acceleration innovation in clean energy technologies is a policy priority for governments around the world aiming to mitigate climate change and to meet rising energy demand. However, beyond researchon the role of governments in financing R&D and steering market demand, there is little understanding of governments and direct startups' partners. Using a new dataset on the global collaborations of 657 US cleantech startups from 2008 to 2012, we assess the importance of technology and licensing collaborations with governments for startup innovation and financial organizations, and not-for-profit organizations. We address pressing policy questions on the role of government interventions in promoting entrepreneurial activity and innovation in the public interest, in this case for energy through cleantech startups.
