The Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland offers an undergraduate program in bioengineering which is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. For more information, see www.abet.org.
Students who wish to study at the A. James Clark School of Engineering apply for admission to the University of Maryland; there is no separate application for engineering. When filling out the university application, you may choose bioengineering as your intended major. You may also apply as an undecided engineering major.
Admission is highly competitive. For example, fall 2013 incoming freshmen had an average GPA of 4.3 and an average SAT score of 1384. Though not required, students are also strongly encouraged to take advanced science and mathematics courses in high school, specifically Physics, Biology, Calculus, and Chemistry as well as English. Acceptable AP credits will be applied toward the degree and will not only prepare students for college level courses but will also decrease the overall course load required to graduate.
All Bioengineering majors must meet admission, progress, and retention standards of the A. James Clark School of Engineering.

Transfer Student Admissions

Please note: If you are applying to Bioengineering as a transfer student (whether you are an internal Clark School transfer, external UMD transfer, or transferring from an outside institution), then you must complete BIOE 120 with a B- before you will be admitted into the department. If you wish to enroll, please send an e-mail with your UID to firstname.lastname@example.org. You will be will be notified by e-mail when permission has been granted.
