Visiting Professor, Dr. Angela Graeff, from the Federal University of Rio Grande Sul – UFRGS (Brazil), will speak about the following topic: “Overview of the fire that partially collapsed the Public Department Building in Porto Alegre/Brazil: Analysis of the development of the fire, rescue activities and building’s structural concept.”

Abstract: A major fire took place at the Public Department Building (called as SSP), in Porto Alegre/Brazil in July 2021. The 9-pavements building was consumed by the fire that rapidly propagated from the third pavement to the ones above. After one and a half hours the reinforced concrete structure partially collapsed, and two firefighters went missing. This seminar deals with the understanding of the development of the fire (lack of fire safety measures and other characteristics that contributed to the rapid spread of the fire), the planning of the rescue activities in a collapsed-zone and the analysis of the structural concept of the building that contributed to the collapse.
