Cryo-EM and 3D Electron Microscopy

Recent advances in “cryo-electron microscopy” (cryo-EM) technology and related methods have sparked a revolution in atomic resolution 3-D imaging that enable determination of structures of biological macromolecules in their native state. Knowledge of the three-dimensional shapes of genes, proteins, protein complexes, viruses, cells and tissue are essential not just to understanding biology but to the process of successful, cost-effective drug design and predicting disease outcomes. Cryo-EM technology is just the beginning of a much larger revolution in imaging biological complexity at the interface between engineering, physics, biology and medicine. In my talk, I will discuss recent work in my lab on developing some of these technologies, their application to important problems in infectious disease, cancer and neuroscience, as well as their potential to accelerate drug discovery and enable transformative approaches to personalized medicine.

About the Speaker

Dr. Sriram Subramaniam received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Stanford University and completed postdoctoral training in the Departments of Chemistry and Biology at M.I.T. He is chief of the Biophysics Section in the Laboratory of Cell Biology at the Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute. He holds a visiting faculty appointment at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His current work is focused on the development of advanced technologies for imaging macromolecular assemblies using 3D electron microscopy, and their application to address fundamental problems in HIV/AIDS and cancer research.
