The Molecular Analysis of Tissue Specimens: Past, Present and Future

Michael Tangrea
Staff Scientist
National Institutes of Health
National Cancer Institute

Tissue specimens exhibit the complete morphological spectrum of disease processes. The ability to understand disease etiology and develop novel therapeutics and diagnostics are enhanced by directly evaluating the molecular profile of specific cell populations in the heterogeneous clinical or animal model tissue environment. However, there is a need for innovative technologies to further advance the field of molecular pathology. Laser Capture Microdissection (LCM), Expression Microdissection (xMD), Layered Expression Scanning (LES), and Two-Dimensional-PCR (2D-PCR) are four new methodologies that have shown utility or early promise and are in various stages of development and implementation. This lecture will focus on the major opportunities and challenges in tissue-based research.
