Development of a High Throughput Bioengineered Skeletal Muscle Array

Eva Chin
Associate Professor
Department of Kinesiology
University of Maryland, College Park

Dr. Chin’s lab utilizes isolated single muscle fibres and an imaging-based system to simultaneously monitor changes in sarcomere length and intracellular Ca2+ to understand underlying mechanisms of muscle failure. Her lab has utilized this imaging-based technology to understand mechanisms underlying skeletal muscle dysfunction in models of neuromuscular disease. Dr. Chin’s lab also utilizes cultured muscle satellite cells to generate myotubes, with the model system being utilized to understand defects in muscle regenerative capacity. Dr. Chin would like to combine these approaches to develop an imaging-based high throughput screening platform. This platform would be utilized to evaluate efficacy of small molecule and biological therapeutics in engineered myotubes with the goal of identifying novel drug candidates for neuromuscular diseases.
