Jules Sherman, MS, MFA, is Principal at JS Design Group, LLC.  She works with clinicians, engineers, patients and families to design medical devices and digital interfaces to improve healthcare. In addition, Jules is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland’s Fischell Department of Bioengineering in the A. James Clark School of Engineering.

In the recent past, Jules was the Biodesign Program Director at Children's National Hospital (CNH) in DC.  Prior to her work at CNH, she spent several years as a product designer for Stanford Medicine at the Safety Learning Lab for Neonatal and Maternal Care. She has been a dedicated educator since 2014, co-teaching various healthcare design classes at Stanford’s d.school and lecturing at UMD, and Georgetown University. 

Jules’s contributions to healthcare research and medical device design have led to 14 published articles, six issued patents, and three pending patents. Her work has also resulted in a product acquisition by Lansinoh and, most recently, the honor of receiving the 2025 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for Product Design.

Before spending the last fifteen years focused on healthcare design, Jules developed consumer products for some of the world's most well-known brands including Costco, Walmart, Target, Restoration Hardware, and Limited Brands. She holds a BFA in Industrial Design from the Rhode Island School of Design, an MFA in Design from Stanford University and an MS in Human-Computer-Interaction from UC Irvine.

Neonatal and pediatric medical complexity, maternal healthcare, brain-computer-interface design.

I am currently working on a medical device called, "Trach Sense: A wearable tracheostomy monitoring device for pediatric patients" with the Fischell Institute at UMD. We will be starting a clinical pilot study at Children's National Hospital by fall of 2026.
