Engineering Biomaterials for Women’s Health: From Detection to Treatment

Speaker Bio

Dr. Wong is an Inaugural Term Distinguished Professor of Engineering  at Boston University. Her research focuses on developing biomaterial systems for early disease detection and treatment, with a particular emphasis on tissue-engineered platforms for investigating disease mechanisms and translating theranostic technologies in women’s reproductive health. She co-directs the Women’s Health pre-ARC (Affinity Research Collaborative) with Drs. Emelia Benjamin and Elisha Wachman – a cross-campus initiative to accelerate women’s health research.

Dr. Wong has published over 120 peer-reviewed publications, holds 11 pending or issued patents, and has mentored over 100 trainees. From 2014-2024, she served as the Inaugural Director of ARROWS – promoting women in STEM at all levels at BU. She received the Charles DeLisi Distinguished Lecture and Award – the College of Engineering highest honor – in 2017, and the Clemson Award for Basic Research from the Society for Biomaterials in 2020. An Elected Fellow of NAI, AAAS, BMES, AIMBE, IAMBE, CRS, and IUSBSE,  she serves as a Deputy Editor for Science Advances and on the NIH NIBIB Advisory Council. She is a past president of AIMBE and President-Elect of the Society for Biomaterials. Outside of academia, Dr. Wong enjoys indoor rock climbing and exploring the natural world, including chasing the northern lights.
