Professor Kuo has been inducted as a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Members of AIMBE are employed in academia, industry, clinical practice, and government. AIMBE’s College of Fellows is comprised of the top two percent of medical and biological engineers. A total of 156 fellows–chosen for outstanding contributions in research, practice, or education–were formally inducted at the AIMBE annual meeting in Washington, D.C., on March 25.

Professor Kuo organizes 1st Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) Northeast Regional Symposium

As the ORS Ambassador for the Northeast, Professor Kuo organized the first ORS Northeast Regional Symposium, held at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. Plenary speakers included Professor Farshid Guilak (ORS past president), Dr. Fei Wang (NIH program director), and Dr. Michele Grimm (NSF program director). Nearly 200 attendees from 24 institutions across the U.S. and Canada attended and presented their research. The 2-day symposium was generously supported by the University of Rochester Department of Orthopaedics and Department of Biomedical Engineering, and the ORS.

Professor Kuo scores in top 2 percentile with NIH R01 application

June 9, 2017

Professor Catherine K. Kuo recently received a 2 percentile rank for her NIH R01 application: “Tendon Tissue Engineering Informed by Lysyl Oxidase Regulation of Embryonic Tendon Mechanical Properties”. The goals of the grant are to characterize lysyl oxidase as a critical regulator of developing embryonic tendon mechanical properties, and to develop approaches to manipulate lysyl oxidase activity to promote functional tendon regeneration with stem cells.

This exciting conference is a premier scientific forum for the scientific investigation of the musculoskeletal system, including cartilage, bone, tendon, ligament, and muscle. Junior and senior investigators alike presented cutting edge research and had ample networking opportunities.


Professor Catherine K. Kuo receives grant from Department of Defense (DoD)

The Department of Defense office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs has awarded Professor Edward Brown and Professor Catherine K. Kuo a grant for their research project titled, "Understanding the Role of Matrix Microstructure in Metastasis.” The goal of this project is to evaluate molecular mechanisms underlying the ability of an optical scattering phenomenon to predict metastatic outcome in patient samples.

Professor Catherine K. Kuo receives funding to study how mechanical loading influences the development birth defects

Associate Professor Catherine K. Kuo (PI, BME), Assistant Professor Mark Buckley (Co-PI, BME), and Dr. Natasha O’Malley (Co-PI, Orthopaedics) received a University Research Award for a new collaborative project, as one of just eight application chosen by senior research leadership. The project “Role of Mechanics in Etiology of Congenital Talipes Equinovarus” will develop novel in vitro and in vivo experimental models to investigate the role of aberrant mechanical loading of embryonic tendons in the development of clubfoot. The findings of this study will help motivate novel prevention and treatment strategies for nearly 200,000 babies born with clubfoot each year.
