Protective Engineering – Application to Ischemic Myocardial Injury

Protective engineering is an emerging bioengineering discipline aiming to develop engineering strategies to induce and optimize protective processes against disorders by genetic and environmental insults. Nature has established various protective mechanisms capable of supporting cell survival and recovery from disorders in response to an insult; however, not all these mechanisms are optimized in promptness and effectiveness, suggesting the necessity of protective engineering. There are two fundamental tasks for protective engineering – understand the naturally occurring protective mechanisms and develop engineering strategies for precise induction and control of the types, levels, timing, and coordination of protective actions to facilitate recovery from disorders. Understanding the natural mechanisms is the foundation for developing protective engineering strategies. In this talk, ischemic myocardial injury will be used as an example to demonstrate the natural cardioprotective mechanisms and the concept of protective engineering.

About the Speaker

Dr. Shu Q. Liu received a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of California at San Diego, CA and is Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. Dr. Liu is interested in cardiovascular protective and regenerative engineering in education and research, focusing on mechanical regulation of vascular regeneration, engineering modulation of vascular cell formation and function, and systems protective mechanisms and engineering against ischemic myocardial and neural injuries.
