The National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GFRP) is one of the highest honors for U.S. doctoral students, providing awardees with a three-year annual stipend of $37,000 along with a $12,000 cost-of-education allowance for tuition and fees.

Unfortunately, among the numerous 4th-year undergraduate and 1st- and 2nd-year graduate student applicants across the country, only ~15% are selected as fellows.

In recent years, students and alumni from Ryan Sochol's group have been particularly successful in being selected for the NSF GRFP—e.g., representing >20% of all Clark School recipients and ~10% of all UMD-affiliated recipients over the past two years. In this workshop, Sochol will share a set of strategies for preparing NSF GRFP applications.

The workshop—designed for both faculty and students—will include examples of Personal Statements, Research Proposals, CVs, and Letters of Recommendation from winning submissions, as well as a live Q&A session for attendees. Our goal is that participating in the seminar will increase the likelihood of UMD-affiliated students being selected for the NSF GRFP.
