Fooling yourself with p-values and other statistics
P-values are arguably the most misunderstood and misused data analysis tool in existence -- and the most influential as well. Unfortunately, even the best researchers are prone to cognitive biases which, when combined with the already problematic p-value and the current scientific research infrastructure, can lead to serious errors in data analysis. This talk will briefly cover the American Statistical Association's 2016 p-values statement, discuss a few common cognitive fallacies in quantitative research, and explore some possible "de-biasing" techniques researchers can use.
