A Message from the BGSS President

For new graduate students, welcome to our department and to the Bioengineering Graduate Student Society (BGSS).

What is BGSS? BGSS is a student-led and department-supported organization dedicated to academic growth, professional development, wellness (social and athletics), and community outreach. Join us for all events or join us for some – there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.

Here are just some examples of upcoming events to keep an eye out for: Bi-weekly Masterclasses/Research and Pizza – RAP, “Dissertations and Donuts," “Proposals and Pancakes,” an Entrepreneurship workshop, Resume/CV guidance, webinars with alumni and industry employees, happy hours, ice cream/coffee socials, basketball/soccer tournaments, running events, a local high school mentorship program (PEPR), food drives – and more!

Looking back on the 2018-2019 school year, there are countless fond memories, but I would like to highlight three of my personal favorites:

  1. In August 2018, we kicked off the school year with a successful first annual BIOE Retreat.
  2. In December, BIOEs showcased their lip-syncing and video production skills with our very own compilation of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” at our annual holiday gathering (and we were quite shocked to learn Freddie Mercury resided in A. James Clark Hall).
  3. In March, Dr. Shawn He's lab earned the championship title at the Second Annual Fischell Classic Basketball Tournament, overcoming a high-quality, fierce faculty team.

Let the traditions continue!  To kick off the 2019-2020 school year, please join us at the Welcome Back Barbeque,Thursday, September 12th at 3:00 p.m.

Looking forward to an exciting and productive school year!

All the best,

Christina Conrad
BGSS President
