The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) National Internship
Program (HNIP), in partnership with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP)
is currently seeking students to fill the following paid internship position. Please

Pay rates:

  • Undergraduate students: $17.20/hour
  • Graduate students: $18.75/hour
  • U.S. Citizenship required.

POSITION: Office of Quality Intern


AGENCY: Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP)

HOURS: 40/week


Operates a full range of laboratory equipment which includes chemical, physical and optical test equipment such as titrators, density meter, crumple tester, abrasion tester, Ultra violet-visible-near infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) spectroscopy; Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), color spectrophotometer rheological profiles, color matching, drying time, fineness of grain and related analyses, Image capture/analysis systems, micrometer, fold tester, tear tester, spectrometers, gas chromatographs, microscopes and universal mechanical testing systems. Prepare lab-scale ink samples and perform analysis of resulting inks.

It is not expected that the intern will know all these techniques. As part of the internship, the person will receive training in:

  • Operation of Laboratory equipment
  • Testing of physical and chemical properties of incoming materials, in process materials and final product
  • Good Laboratory Practices

This internship is suitable for students in science fields. The ideal candidate is interested in working in a chemical lab environment. Ideally, the person will have:

  • Knowledge of basic chemical and physical principles applicable to testing and evaluation of materials that would be acquired through a bachelor's degree program or higher in chemistry, physics, or engineering field.
  • Knowledge in the maintaining and operating laboratory instrumentation such as physical or chemical property analyzers (e.g., pH, thickness, porosity, viscosity) and/or microscopes and spectrometers.
  • Knowledge in basic statistical analysis, concepts, and sampling techniques
  • Skill in communicating technical issues effectively, both orally and in writing.
