Newsweek: Biomedical Engineering Career a "Safe Bet"

A recently-published article on Newsweek's web site ranks biomedical engineering #2 in its list of "12 Secure Jobs for the Next Decade: A dozen safe bets in the volatile U.S. labor market."

Newsweek cites the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS) 2010-2011 Occupational Outlook Handbook, which puts biomedical engineering at the top of its list of the 20 occupations with the fastest growth. The BLS projects a 72% increase in demand for biomedical engineers between 2008 and 2018, which represents up to 11,600 new positions. Biomedical engineers were also among the highest median wage earners of the group at $77,400 in 2008.

"The aging of the population and a growing focus on health issues will drive demand for better medical devices and equipment designed by these workers," the BLS reports on its web site. "In fact, biomedical engineers are projected to be the fastest growing occupation in the economy."

Students at the A. James Clark School of Engineering may currently pursue a B.S. or Ph.D. in the Fischell Department of Bioengineering. Starting in Fall 2010, the department will offer online Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) and graduate certificate programs administered by the Office of Advanced Engineering Education. Students at the University of Maryland School of Medicine may apply to the Master of Science in Bioengineering/Doctor of Medicine (M.S./M.D.) dual degree program.
