BMES-UMD Honored with Outstanding Chapter Industry Award
This summer, the Biomedical Engineering Society at the University of Maryland (BMES-UMD) was recognized with the Outstanding Chapter Industry Award. There are 87 BMES student chapters internationally.
The Outstanding Chapter Industry Award is granted annually to a chapter which demonstrates outstanding partnership with industries in their community; chapters who go above and beyond by creating joint programs with academic and industry leaders in the biomedical engineering field in order to give their members a headstart upon graduation. The award consists of an engraved plaque, two complimentary BMES Annual Meeting registrations, and travel support reimbursements of up to $1,000.
The winning chapter was also asked to lead a best practice panel at the BMES Annual Meeting, scheduled for October 6-9, 2021. BMES-UMD attendees will also participate in a webinar featuring their successes at this hybrid event.
“This award demonstrates the perseverance of the BMES board and the Fischell Department of Bioengineering (BIOE) to still create amazing enrichment opportunities during a pandemic,” says chapter president Varunaa Hemanth. “This award is a stepping stone to creating more impactful events for our members going forward.”
Hemanth is a third-year student in the BIOE B.S./M.S. program, which provides undergraduate students the opportunity to complete the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Master of Science (M.S.) degrees in approximately five and a half years by double counting graduate coursework toward the B.S. and M.S. degrees. She is a volunteer researcher in BIOE Professor Tao Lowe’s Biomaterials for Translational Research Laboratory, and has been involved in BMES-UMD since her freshman year.
This fall, Hemanth will participate in the Q&A with the Chapter Leaders session at the BMES Annual Meeting.
